HARD EDGE(D) with Torben Giehler: Special Guided Tour
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, German artist Torben Giehler will lead a tour of the group exhibition, Hard Edge(d). Giehler's work is represented in the exhibition with the painting, 'Circling Overland' (2002), which greets visitors immediately upon entering the historic Rittersaal space.
The term "hard edge" was first coined in 1959 by American art critic Jules Langsner to describe a style of geometric abstraction exemplified by clearly defined fields of color along a flattened plane.
Installed within Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg's historic Haupteingang and Rittersaal, this show explores the evolution of "hard edge" over the last six decades while contemporizing the castle's grand and decorative spaces in new and surprising ways.
Torben Giehler, born in 1973 in Bad Oeynhausen, studied from 1995 to 1999 at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the New York Studio Program. After graduating, Giehler spent 10 years living and working in New York City. Today, the artist lives and works in Berlin.
