What role does art play in politics - and the artist in society? Hardly any other artist has addressed these questions as consistently as Jörg Immendorff (1945-2007). Parallel to cultivating a high-profile persona as a celebrated yet controversial "painter prince," he spent his entire life exploring the political, social and identity-forming functions of art. By the end of the 20th century, his unmistakable visual language had made him one of the most internationally renowned German artists of his generation.
