French sculptor Jean-Marie Appriou creates sculptures that bring myth, the natural world and the imagination into dialogue. In The Big Traveler and The Big Watcher, the relationship between each animal and its sculpted reflection invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries of perception. The Big Watcher (identified by its slightly opened mouth) and The Big Traveler (2020) constitute a monumental cast aluminum pairing of two camels which appear suspended above their sculpted reflections. The Big Traveler evokes a continuing journey, while The Big Watcher seems to pause, absorbed in a vision that remains beyond the viewer's sight. Appriou's sculptural practice gives visible form to imagined beings through modeling and metal casting. The paired sculptures result in an uncanny scene, as the camels' reflected image above ground is made further surreal by the uniform application of material and color. Conceived by the artist for outdoor installation and meant to be sited close to each other, the monumental scale of the camels gives these contemplative figures a striking presence in the surrounding landscape. The camels appear plucked from the desert into unusual cityscapes (such as in this work's previous installation in Amsterdam's ARTZUID), or here in the park of a castle. The doubling of the animals evokes the elusive appearance of a Fata Morgana. Together, the two sculptures bring the quest into dialogue with contemplation, inviting viewers to imagine what might become visible beyond the limits of ordinary perception.
