Sun Yuan and Peng Yu
Hall Collection
Two of China’s most controversial artists, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, have collaborated together in Beijing since the late 1990s. The two met at the Central Academy of Fine Arts where they both studied oil painting, although they have worked in unconventional media since the 2000s. The hyper realistic sculpture I am here (2006/2010), which the pair debuted at the Liverpool Biennial in 2006, is comprised of an isolated figure dressed in Middle Eastern clothing, military garb including an AK-47 slung over his shoulder, and American style combat boots, peering through a hole in a wall. Though the sculpture is perhaps a provocation with global resonance following numerous terrorist attacks, including 9/11, the sculpture is also meant to reference authorship. Yuan has explained, “’I am Here’ means two things. One, is that in reality, whatever we do or say is under watchful eye. The eye of someone is always there, and it says ‘I’m here.’ The second is that as super-realist artists, it seems as though our work is not cohesive, but perhaps people have actually seen our work but haven’t made the connection. In that way, we are saying ‘we’re here.’”[1]
