In A.R. Penck’s 3-meter-long drawing Trump – Lenin – Stalin – Rockefeller (1989), the four named subjects are identified by inscriptions and notable facial characteristics including Stalin’s mustache. During a televised interview for a series documenting subculture of the 1980s, the drawing hung behind Penck in the swimming pool of a Cologne hotel. During the interview, the artist discussed differences between East and West Germany with gallery owner Brigitte Schenk. By centering the composition on two Soviet leaders, bordered by two American businessmen, Penck appears to be equating America’s economy with post-war totalitarian regimes.
