Adrian Ghenie
Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie is known for his gesturally abstracted portraits of famous political leaders and historical archetypes depicted within dystopian environments. In The Nightmare (2007), Ghenie imagines himself visited by Adolf Hitler, who watches over the sleeping artist, accompanied by two giant Alsatians dogs sitting in front of a group of paintings stacked against the wall. Set within a darkened room resembling an attic, the work's dark colors heighten an ominous sense of danger.
