The Colombian-born, New York-based artist Carlos Motta works in various media, including film, photography and sculpture, and maintains a wide practice incorporating writing, teaching and activism. He explores "relationships between past and present, and about the politics of knowing and not knowing."[1] During a residency at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Motta photographed people visiting the southeastern side of Ground Zero from the 8th floor of the Equitable Building. In pixelated images that comprise Motta's Public Domain series, the figures are often seen looking through, over, or standing by a fence. Photographed before One World Trade Center was constructed, and many years before the 9/11 memorial was made publicly available on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack, the visitors seem to be searching for a view of what is not yet visible and raising questions around access and shared grief after collective loss.
