Raymond Pettibon is an American artist who began his career by creating flyers and album covers for punk bands like Black Flag and Sonic Youth. A prolific draftsman, Pettibon has created thousands of drawings which meld an alternative and progressive ethos, a devotion to literature, and a strong critique of politics in blunt and often humorous fashion, employing a quick drafting process to themes both highbrow and complicated. In the drawing No Title (Why press him?) (2007), former President George W. Bush is depicted with blood on his outstretched hands. Capitalized text in red inscribed above his head asks "WHY PRESS HIM?", while text underneath it continues "at the call for questions hands shot up, some asking for high fives, others showing stigmata…" With these inscriptions, Pettibon offers a condemnation of a subservient press pool while recalling the bloody wounds of Christ's crucifixion.
