Enrique Chagoya
In his drawing series Poor George (2004), Mexican-born artist Enrique Chagoya pays homage to Philip Guston's drawings Poor Richard (Nixon), as well as to the work of Mexican satirist José Guadalupe Posada. In Poor George #5, Bush rides in a convertible with a Pinocchio nose, joined by his cone- headed Vice President, Dick Cheney, along with a floating pair of square glasses which Guston used in his own work to reference Henry Kissinger. By joining the two American Presidential administrations, Chagoya raises questions about history repeating itself, while honoring Guston's work in iconography, subject and title, and in the restricted use of tones (black, red).
