Michael Scoggins
American artist Michael Scoggins confronts complex topics through the perspective of a schoolboy, employing large-scale sheets and graphite to create enlarged notebook drawings. By adapting a childlike perspective, Scoggins suggests that matters of governmental policy for the average citizen can be an uphill battle with consequences. In I Promise I’ll be a Better Patriot (2012), Scoggins writes the line 25 times, dating and signing the page at the upper right corner as if it were a completed class assignment. Made during the rise of the Occupy movement, Scoggins’ work seems to question when and whether criticizing patriotism is allowed without being subjected to punishment.
