Pan Am 103 refers to the 1988 flight tragically ended by a terrorist bomb. The plane, operating on a regularly scheduled transatlantic route between Frankfurt and Detroit, crashed in the Scottish village of Lockerbie, where large sections of the airplane landed in residential areas. Over 250 people were killed. In Pan Am 103 (2003), Christoph Draeger creates a painting based on a photograph of the crash site. Fragmenting his image over 4,000-jigsaw puzzle pieces, Draeger's work alludes to the destruction caused by the crash itself.
