The Irish-born artist Michael Craig-Martin returned to the UK in 1966 after completing his studies in the United States. Initially working as a conceptual artist, since the 1990s Craig-Martin developed a vocabulary of commonplace items which populate his paintings and sculptures. Craig-Martin has explained, "I'm into the basicness of ordinary things... I'm not interested in design, not in kitsch, not in consumer aspects of everyday things. It's the idea of color, form. I'm trying to get at something so simple and transparent that it's got to a position when you can't subdivide it again."[1] In paintings like Wrench (2002), Craig-Martin fantastically transforms the viewer's relationship to a common tool through unusual color scheme, scale, and a close cropping of the composition at its margins. His approach combines the color of Pop Art with the simplicity of Minimalism.
