The German artist Imi Knoebel lives and works in Düsseldorf. A former student of Joseph Beuys, and classmate of Blinky Palermo and Jörg Immendorff, Knoebel's practice is dedicated to the perceptual arrangement of color. He studied the pre-Bauhaus style taught by Johannes Itten and László Moholy-Nagy, and continues Kazimir Malevich's approach in painting towards "pure perception." Shortly after Palermo's death in 1977,  Knoebel made "24 Colors-for Blinky," suggesting an emotional resonance within his work. In Figurenbild (1988), three uniform vertical rectangles painted on wood panels in gold, light pink and magenta are aligned equidistant from one another. The pink-toned rectangles sit at the bottom margin of a larger panel in a field of light blue, while the smaller gold panel sits adjacent to the left. Unlike the hard edge painters of the 1960s, the gestural application of paint remains visible in Knoebel's work and does not conceal the economic materials he uses (including plywood, aluminum and fiberboard).
