Danish artist, Jeppe Hein's series of functional sculptures reimagine the basic form of an urban-style garden or park bench. Hein considers the surrounding architecture and environment to determine the possibilities for human perception of space. His minimalist designs create fresh contexts for social interaction among viewers and prompt direct physical engagement with the structures. Occupation, both literal and metaphorical, of a bench becomes an intentional behavior and is often infused with humor and playfulness. Some benches are cleverly integrated with elements of the natural environment, adding surprise and delight for participants and audience.
