MARKUS LÜPERTZ AND DR. PAY MATTHIS KARSTENS IN CONVERSATION

Sunday | June 9, 2024 | 3 p.m.

On the occasion of the exhibition Markus Lüpertz: In the Trenches, Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg invites you to a conversation between the artist and Dr. Pay Matthis Karstens of Galerie Judin, Berlin.

The artist, poet and musician Markus Lüpertz is one of the most important and influential artists of the German post-war period. His exhibition In the Trenches focuses on works made on paper from 1964 to 1976, which trace the development of Lüpertz's idiosyncratic iconography. The combination of Cold War era abstraction with mainstream, commercial or banal themes continues to form the basis of his intellectual approach to painting and sculpture. This survey, which includes celebrated subjects like Donald Duck, railway tracks, tree trunks, and soldiers, allows an intimate overview of some of Lüpertz’s most important themes, and features works that have not been publicly exhibited in more than forty years.

Lüpertz moved to West Berlin in 1962 at the age of 21, where he independently met the artists Georg Baselitz and Eugen Schönebeck. In conversation, Lüpertz and Karstens discuss not only themes within his own work, but also the artistic communities and political context in West Berlin when the wall was being built, as well as Lüpertz's relationship with Baselitz and Schönebeck whose intensive friendship famously peaked in 1962. Works by both artists created in the four years immediately following the end of their friendship are currently on view in the exhibition Self-Taught: Baselitz/Schönebeck, 1962-66.

Markus Lüpertz (b. 1941, Bohemia) lives and works in Berlin and Düsseldorf, Germany. His work has been exhibited extensively since 1973, including recent surveys at the Haus der Kunst, Munich; Palazzo Loredan, Venice; Hirshhorn Museum and Phillips Collection, Washington DC; the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Kunst- und Austellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn; Gementeemuseum, The Hague, and the Hermitage State Museum, St. Petersburg.

Pay Matthis Karstens (b. 1989, Flensburg) studied Art and Visual History, German Literature and Contemporary Art Theory at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at Goldsmiths in London. He has worked on projects for the German Historical Museum, Käthe Kollwitz Museum Berlin, Berlinische Galerie, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt among others. He is co-editor of catalogs of works by Eugen Schönebeck, Michael Buthe and Cornelia Schleime, as well as the co-founder and board member of Das Kleine Grosz Museum in Berlin. Since 2016, he has been running Galerie Judin together with Juerg Judin.

TICKETS AND BOOKING OF ARTIST TALKS

The conversation will be held in German. The number of participants is limited. Booking in advance is recommended.

Cost: €4 plus a regular/reduced admission ticket for the museum including the sculpture park.
Participation costs €2 for annual pass holders.
